Auditioning: NEW STORAHTELLERS – June 11th


Actors and Performer/Educators to join a company of artists as “Mavens” who will bring Torah (bible) stories to life.

The oldest storytelling tool in the Jewish tool-box can now be yours! If you are a creative and out of the box Jewish educator, clergy member, rabbinical/cantorial student, B’nai Mitzva tutor, or performance artist/actor – this training is for YOU.

The Maven Method, Storahtelling-Lab/Shul’s signature pedagogy, co-created by Amichai Lau-Lavie and a team of artists, educators, clergy and activists for over a decade will be once again taught this coming summer in NYC.

Lab/Shul is an everybody friendly, artist-driven, experimental community for sacred Jewish gatherings based in NYC, reaching the world (more here: www.labshul.org).  Lab/Shul is auditioning new Storahtelling Mavens to join the ranks of our esteemed, internationally renowned company of artists

Lab/Shul’s Storahtelling Mavens restore the ancient role of the translator who revitalizes the traditional Torah Reading Service through dramatic, interpretive translation.  

New Mavens will be trained by Storahtelling senior trainers, and become members of a renowned cadre of professional actors, educators and change-makers in New York City, the United States and around the world.  Company members are paid on a per-performance basis.


  • Professionally-trained actors and performers
  • Ability to facilitate meaningful conversations for diverse ages and audiences
  • Desire to inspire people with Jewish wisdom, knowledge, and humor
  • Possess basic Judaic literacy and Hebrew skills
  • Plan to stay in New York City for at least the next 2 years
  • Ability to attend mandatory full-day training August 10-13, 2015 (non-negotiable)

You must be available that evening as there is no alternate audition date.  If you are invited to an audition you will be asked to prepare a short monologue based on a piece of Torah text that we will provide as well as sing 16 bars of a song of your choice a capella OR showcase another talent (musical talent, ventriloquism, circus arts, spoken word, etc.)
