“FOR AS LONG AS YOU’RE IN THE SWEET SPOT”

How long are we supposed to leave our menorah burning into the night? 

According to the Talmud, the answer is “from when the sun sets until the foot has gone from the marketplace”– in other words, in that window of early evening when people are still out in the streets.

Before street lamps, this window only lasted about 30 minutes. It’s a short period of time, but the rabbis chose it because it was their sweet spot: dark enough for the menorah’s light to shine visibly, early enough to ensure that many people would actually see it...
