Dear Lab/Shul,
How does an artist-driven laboratory for sacred Jewish gathering come into Shabbat during terrible times?
We say, “Come back, come home. Return yourself to yourself.” We find each other beyond words, beyond ideas, in the in-between. We settle our bones and rest our weary spirit, in order to rejuvenate for what life brings. On the path toward creating the world we want to live in, I hear a reflection of Shabbat in Tricia Hershey of The Nap Ministry, “Welcome to your Dreamspace…Stay here. Stay in rest…Our collective rest will save us. You are enough. Our dreams are enough. This is imagination work. A portal opens when we slow down. You can rest.”
Join us for our first Sabbath Queen of the season on 11/17, when the portal to radical imagination opens with gentle ease. Wherever you are, come home and take a breath. We’ll meet in one of our favorite Brooklyn art spaces. While sitting in the round, Rabbi Amichai and I will offer a simple invitation into sacred space, and our musical ritualists Ben Freeman, Jasmine deLeon and Aviv Blum will bring the rhythms, reeds, and music your soul will thank you for. Afterward we’ll gather ‘round the table together for a Community Feast (registration required).
Out beyond polarization, All are welcome here.
And as we embark upon the Sabbath ahead, and with acknowledgement of the challenging world moment in which we are living, we honor all veterans who have bravely sacrificed of themselves in the name of democracy and for the freedoms we cherish here in America.
To continue our message of hope and peace in heartbreaking times, we invite you to watch Rabbi Amichai’s Shloshim gathering from last Saturday night, reminding us all that it is on us to expand the circles of courage and care. Stay tuned for Lab/Shul’s monthly “Spiritual Survival” salons, which take a deep dive into the ancient toolbox our ancestors left us to navigate modern challenges.
“Spiritual Survival” salons are exclusive to Lab/Shul Partners. Not a Partner yet? Please join us as a Lab/Shul Partner with a financial contribution in any amount.
