Greetings and blessings, Lab/Shul Community!

My name is Elana June Margolis. I am a teacher, writer and artist living on Lenapehoking in what is currently known as BedStuy in Brooklyn, NY. I spend my days teaching Third Grade at the Brooklyn Waldorf School and my evenings training with the Kohenet Hebrew Priestess Institute and sharing wisdom with a wide and wild network of Queer Jewish Visionaries across the globe.

After years of hearing about Lab/Shul, I was blessed to meet Lab/Shul’s Shira Kline on Fire Island two summers ago. Inspired by Shira’s vibrance, I started coming to Lab/Shul events and quickly found myself yearning to drink directly from the well of your collective knowing, prayerful practice, and ritual theater magic.

I have a deep and passionate relationship to Jewish wheels of time and the many holy days and festivals that connect us to the ancestors, the descendants, the earth’s rhythms and community. I have a particularly strong relationship to Purim – the holy day that begs us to dissolve binaries, to surrender in sovereignty to the knowing of the unknown, to shake the clutch of reality from our bones and release into the revelation of who we really are once we have taken off the costume of our daily lives and slipped into our most sacred drag.

Join Lab/Shul Feb 25th @9PM for our Prophetic Purim!

This Preposterous Pandemic Post Patriarchal Prophetic Purim Portal will be my 10th Purim production. The first eight blossomed in the Bay Area in fringe locations – in piles of rubble against the sea, in legendary basements, on rooftops, in houses, in a whole host of seedy bars, and at the historic Stud (RIP). Last year, after relocating to Brooklyn, I was honored to produce Purim in collaboration with the creative minds behind The Spectrum (legendary queer artist & performer community space). Purim is my favorite Portal, the Temple I open once a year and through which, I find myself ready to recommit to Spring when it arrives.

This year, it is my true honor and profound pleasure to be collaborating with Amichai, Shira and the rest of the Lab/Shul team to open this Preposterous Pandemic Post Patriarchal Prophetic Purim Portal. Purim 5781 is, for many of us, the Yarzheit (one year anniversary) since we gathered in person. This thread we tug on is tender. I am honored to tug and weave this thread into a portal that delivers us into the sacred medicine of laughter and the revelation of pleasurable dissolution.

We are crafting an online evening of decadent and deranged offerings starring many of your beloved community members – each of them transmitting an entirely new and entirely fresh narration of the Purim story.

I so hope you will join us on a journey through the Seven Gates of Sovereign Surrender. It is a magical, mystical, surreal, seductive, belly-laugh path, and none of us walk it alone.

With blessing and enormous gratitude,

Elana June Margolis
