Join us for a staged reading & talkback of highlights from Becoming Israel, an original play written by Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie, directed by Annie Levy, and staged by Storahtelling in 2008 to mark Israel’s 60th year.
Revised for today’s context, Becoming Israel serves as a thought-provoking entry point for facilitated discussions on modern-day challenges, questions and realities of Israel/Palestine and Jewish identity.
This event – led by Rabbi Amichai and Lab/Shul’s leadership – opens the week that holds the complex narratives of Israel’s existence, with commemoration of losses, celebration of survival and creation of ceremonies for hope, healing and peace for all the people who consider the holy land their home.
More on Becoming Israel:
Becoming Israel intertwines three parallel lives—Leah, a Biblical wife; Rachel, a Holocaust survivor; and Jake, a young American on his first trip to Israel—who discover their shared story and common name: Israel, “The One Who Struggles with Life.” This powerful narrative examines the intersections of individual identity and collective memory, offering a closer look at the legacy of Israel and its relevance in our current global reality. Originally created by Rabbi Amichai and Storahtelling artists in 2008, Becoming Israel was revised in 2025.
