Shavuot Across Brooklyn

Join different minyanim, synagogues, and organizations from across Brooklyn in an all-night tikkun at Congregation Beth Elohim. Beginning at 9:00 PM, the program will feature 40+ learning sessions from some of our borough’s finest teachers, ending with sunrise services in the wee hours of the morning. This event is a hallmark of the Brooklyn Jewish calendar, and we’re excited to host it again this year.

6/11 @ 11 PM – with Naomi Less: ”
Regendered Torah: An Interactive Exploration”
Join Yael Kanarek, Toratah’s founder, and Naomi Less, the artistic producer of the groundbreaking new album, Songs of Toratah: ZimraTah as we dive into an interactive exploration learning about Toratah, the regendered Torah. The Songs of Toratah features stylistically diverse compositions by international singer-songwriters who composed singable melodies from verses of Toratah. Through their words and music, they contributed to the creation of a new cultural language. This session will feature live music and engaging study + surprise guest singers and musicians.

6/11 @ 11 PM – with Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and Rabbi Rachel Timoner:
“All You Need is Vav: how a broken letter in the Torah can help us repair ruptures and build Both/And Attitudes”
In these times of extreme polarization and division, in particular when our world seems split between those who are pro-Israel and those who are pro-Palestine, why and how might we foster a Both/And attitude within ourselves and our spheres of influence? Can we derive such an attitude from Jewish tradition? How do we hold Both/And without equating degrees of suffering, without flattening the power differentials, or without abdicating loyalty to our own people?  And what are the limits of Both/And? A single letter in the Torah may hold the key to holding it all together.

6/11 @ TBD – with Shira Kline:
“SongCircle on the Mountain Top”
Lab/Shul’s Shira Kline with Rachel Chang of LUNAR Collective and A Queer Niggun Project circle up on the mountaintop to raise our collective spirit together. We’ll use song, silence, high vibe melodies both old and new, to connect, to uplift and to let go into the Shavuot Harvest Season. Come with a song, come sing along, just come! As singing is a listening practice as well, gentle instrument play is welcome and no musical experience is necessary.

6/12 @ 12:05 AM – with Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie and Rabbi Rachel Timoner:
“Repair the World at Any Cost? The Jewish History and Ethical Dilemmas of Hostage Redemption, and the Surprising Origin of Tikkun Olam”
Nine months later, the fate of so many hostages remains unknown. The question of how to bring them home is incredibly divisive due to political, theological, and ideological concerns. It turns out we’re not the first generation to grapple with such tragic moral dilemmas. The debates between the imperative to save every single human life and the obligation to communal survival are recorded throughout Jewish history and surprisingly birthed the aspirational term tikkun olam, to repair the world. On this night of revelation, how can this history help us make sense of the anguish of this present moment and give us tools to participate in the needed healing?
