A Multi-Faith New Year’s Eve Watchnight Service
On December 31, 1862 Black communities across the United states eagerly awaited the midnight hour. The Emancipation Proclamation was due to become law at the stroke of midnight, January 01, 1863. In remembrance of promised freedom and in anticipation of the hopes of freedom realized, Black communities have gathered for “Watch Night” services. To this day, we are called to reflect on the progress of promised freedom, and we are still called to fight for the fullness of our desires to see freedom realized.
Join Lab/Shul, St. James Presbyterian Church, and Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church on this New Year’s Eve, more poignantly known as “Freedom’s Eve,” to talk about where we’ve been and to affirm our resolve to go forward for the liberation of all.
