“We will not be satisfied until justice runs down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Dear Lab/Shul,

This coming Friday eve, Sabbath Queen says: Let the Waters flow.

These words that Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, borrowed from the biblical prophet Amos, epically call in water’s power to transform.

We need these words and we need these waters. They are alive within us today as we struggle to mark our way through individual transformation. They resonate as we overcome our resistance to collective liberation. And so we call in the prophets, the dreamers, the radical visionaries to help us move into a place that we have not yet been. We call in the prayers, the poetry, the breath of song and silence in being.

This Friday night we’ll honor the life and work of Martin Luther King. In the reverberations of his rigorous pursuit, We will pour from the great waters wellspring of liberation.

We will pour water for change.

We will pour for connection.

We will pour to dream together, as Zora Neale Hurston says “The dream is the truth.”

King spoke of the “palace of justice.” Another of our prophets – a friend and justice-seeking partner of Dr. King’s – Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, called Shabbat a “palace in time.”  What better place for a dream gathering?

Join us this Friday at 6pm for Sabbath Queen. Following the ritual at our Community Feast, Lab/Shul’s Racial Equity and Action Delegation (READ) will facilitate an optional discussion about racial equity at Lab/Shul, grounded in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings.

Finally, THANK YOU for helping us meet our $100,000 year-end match! With your support, we can continue to enable our “Beloved Community” – and our dedication to Dr. King’s vision of a society based on justice and love – to thrive.

Take part in actualizing MLK’s vision by volunteering this weekend. See below for various ways to offer your acts of service across NYC.
