Dear Lab/Shul,

I hope these past days of Sukkot have been filled with light and joy, living up to the holiday’s biblical name: Z’man Simchateinu – The Season of Rejoicing.

We are delighted to kick off our 5785 programmatic year with a new look for our newsletter! We hope you enjoy the streamlined navigation and updated design. Big shout out to Lauren Stanton, Lab/Shul’s Communications Manager, for conceiving and beautifully executing our new “Lab/Letter”.

This Friday is Simchat Torah – the holy day that concludes both the annual reading of the 5 Books and our High Holy season – bringing the awareness that our joy will certainly be diminished as we mark the Hebrew anniversary of the 10/7 attacks and the horrors that have transpired since. As we head into the coming complex days of mixed joy and sorrow, let us be reminded of our strength, resiliency, and empathy for one another, which was so evident when more than 1,500 of us came together – in person and online from all over the world – over Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur earlier this month.

I feel privileged to be part of this community of care and compassion, and I look forward to a year ahead filled with many holy moments, courageous conversations and celebrations.

Wishing us all a year ahead of healing and peace.

Chag Sameach,
Sarah Sokolic
