What does it mean to experience a “sense of community?”

I have been fascinated with this question for most of my professional life. It is difficult to quantify, but we know it when we feel it – we feel a sense of belonging and of being a part of something that matters. We get something in return for our participation, and we share an emotional connection.

On July 29, 2019, Lab/Shul launched Partnerhood. It was a new chapter in our story of developing the deeply engaged, cross-connected community that we wanted. More than 200 households joined us as Partners, and the timing was inspired.

Little did we know then that our focus on cultivating nurturing and meaningful connection to one other would be so desperately necessary at this very moment of physical distancing.

The groundwork had been laid and we are now experiencing the benefits.

On March 11, 2020 Lab/Shul began re-imagining how to foster a sense of community online. We created brand new opportunities for learning and spiritual survival and implemented systems for community care. None has been executed perfectly, but all are centered on ensuring that everyone who participates experiences a sense of community. We see how many of you are joining us for these experiments, and we are committed to this work for the long haul.

But we need your support to be able to live up to this commitment.

If you have not yet already, please join us in the Partnerhood. There are many options, including becoming a Digital Partner for only $12.50 per month. Your financial contribution in any amount will ensure that our staff can keep delivering the artist-driven, everybody friendly, god-optional programming that provides you with a sense of belonging and emotional connection at the time you need it the most.

NEW – THRIVING ARTISTS FUND:

Between now and May 31, 2020, 15% of every new Partnerhood contribution will be designated toward our new Thriving Artists Fund, ensuring that Lab/Shul can continue to hire and financially support the talented freelance musicians and artists that fuel our work.

Thank you for your trust, support and friendship.

With love and in good health,

Sarah Sokolic
