Lab/Shul Community,

Tonight’s new moon is special.
Bundle up to look up.

Tonight, our Semitic calendar meets the Lunar one as we welcome in the Chinese New Year of the Ox. This celestial crescent reveals the path that leads to the Purim Portal of Transformation. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Purim 2020 was the last event we celebrated off-screen, together at the House of Yes, with very different masks on, and a very different reality. (Announcement coming soon about how we’re honoring losses, celebrating resilience, and making sense of the one year anniversary of the Covid-19 shutdown.)

How do we mark these moments, and unmask the fear to take a deeper look at what masks are mystically about, and how they can help our spirits soar?

What rituals will help us to insist on joy, as we support each other and those who need us most? Can we be brave enough to turn things upside down, let down our guard for just one night, so we can get at truth and seriously kick patriarchy’s ass with ox size power?

Scroll down to explore paths + portals, our Partnerhood Purim Exchange, programs + invitations to the weeks ahead, and start preparing for the portal! (I’m starting to work on my mask and costume this Sunday, FYI.)

Starting with Zen Shabbat tonight, we’ll usher in Shabbat, grateful to be lit up with the lunar love that has given all our human ancestors light through long nights of darkness. Shira, Sensei Koshin and I will share silence, sacred songs and wisdom from the bulls. Following worship, I’m hosting a zoom-candlelight shabbat dinner featuring secrets and stories about how we self love.

A Sabbath wish of peace and love. Pass it on to someone else, with or without a heart shaped chocolate.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Amichai
